Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES) (BDA/DAS) require annual inspections per NFPA 72 and NFPA 1225 to ensure public safety radio coverage. Inspections include RF grid testing, battery backup tests, antenna/cable inspections, and component checks to verify code compliance. These must be performed by qualified, licensed technicians, and findings submitted to the AHJ.
Key Components of an ERCES Annual Inspection
- RF Grid Testing: Testing signal strength across the building and comparing it to the original acceptance test to detect degradation.
- Battery & Power Backup: Testing the BDA's battery backup under load (often a 1-hour test) to ensure it can function during a power outage.
- Visual & Physical Inspection: Checking antennas, cables, and components for damage, rust, or improper installation.
- Alarm Validation: Verifying that alarms (e.g., antenna failure, battery malfunction, BDA failure) are properly monitored and communicate with the fire alarm panel.
- Documentation Review: Reviewing previous, required paperwork to ensure compliance with local ordinances and NFPA standards.
Regulatory Requirements
- Standards: Inspections are governed by NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code), NFPA 1225 (Standard for Emergency Services Communications), and local IFC (International Fire Code) 510 requirements.
- Frequency: Annual inspections are mandatory, with full, quantitative re-testing often required every 5 years.
- Responsibility: Building owners are responsible for ensuring the system is maintained and that inspection reports are filed with the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) or fire marshal.
Failure to pass this annual inspection can result in a loss of a building's certificate of occupancy.
Our testing certification includes:
- RF survey – 20/40 grid test
- Verification of BDA (Bi-Directional Amplifier) gain and filter settings.
- DAS headend and main fire panel supervisory alarm testing.
- Backup battery or power supply 4-hour run test and physical inspection of active/passive components.
- Recertification compliance report will be provided to the local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) with 1 hard copy to be stored on site.
We utilize PCTEL for our public safety network testing solutions. These tests will require us to have access to the building. If the building is occupied we recommend that you notify workers, residents and occupants so they know when to expect us.
